our story
Situated at the foot of the Swartberg mountain range at the entrance to the Meiringspoort in the village of De Rust in South Africa, the black mountain retreat is a custom-built space designed for reflection, contemplation, and nurturing Spirit.
The space has been dreamed into being by artist Hermann Niebuhr, who has been living in the foot of these mountains for 30 years. A vision for place and space has been honed from years of retreats and partnership between Hermann and fellow teacher Darren Rudkin (author, speaker, guide, and Founder of Mind at Work, UK ). Each element of the space puts you at the centre of stillness, and is conceived to support an unplugging from busyness, a deep inner connection, and an openness to receiving inspiration and Higher Guidance.
Niebuhr has long been attending and leading retreats and has cultivated the sensitivity and depth of inner practices required to offer a retreat personalised to your needs .
Whilst every retreat here is unique, there is an underlying flow of retreat based on the ancient wisdom of supporting the retreater through a process of unplugging, connecting , receiving inspiration and purpose-full re-entry into the fullness of one's life.

a consciously built retreat space with majestic views over the Swarberg mountains and the village of De Rust. Designed to compliment and engage the vernacular Karoo architecture with a contemporary feel, the 2 bedroom en suite space has a generous open plan living/ dinning/ kitchen area. A large deck and natural pool complete the space.

The outdoor lounge area is covered by a generous pergola and relaxed seating. The lower deck area is complete with comfortable sun loungers perfect for soaking up the rays on the sundeck. Enjoy a magical star-viewing that offers a spectacle of stars under the Karoo night sky.

The natural swimming pool where crystal-clear water harmonizes with greenery, and aquatic plants. Enjoy a refreshing swim surrounded by nature free from harmful chemicals, as the sound of falling water soothes you to sleep.
